Tis’ the Season to be Conscious

Jamie Hofmann

It’s official. As much as we hate to admit it, winter is here. This season can be a disaster for our skin. We’re out in the cold, inside with the heat on, washing our hands more, taking hotter showers, and oftentimes, we’re drinking less water. Our poor skin is left so dehydrated, resulting in cracked hands, all-around dry skin, rough patches, and more. We know the struggle and we want to help so we’ve put together our top 5 tips for keeping your skin happy all winter long.

  1. Drink more water!

Because it’s cooler out, many of us tend to drink less water during the winter months. This can be detrimental to our skin health because hydration starts from the inside. While you may be tempted to reach for another coffee or hot chocolate, consider going for a hot water with lemon. This delightful beverage will warm you up and deliver some much-needed H2O to the old epidermis. Add a piece of fresh ginger root or a couple of mint leaves as a special touch.

  1. Avoid lotions and creams.

We might have mentioned this before, but lotions and creams are THE WORST. Wolves in sheep’s clothing, these products promise to deliver gentle, nourishing moisture to your skin, but are actually loaded with ingredients that will dry out your skin, damage the skin’s ability to naturally heal itself, and poison your body in the long run. Lotions and creams are water-based (i.e. full of preservatives) and more-often-than-not, contain alcohol and other skin-drying ingredients. When choosing a moisturizer, choose something oil-based and free of alcohol, fragrance, and other chemicals.

  1. Exfoliate!

We can help our skin in the winter by exfoliating and sloughing off dead skin cells. Moisture cannot penetrate the skin when there is too much dead skin build-up. It is important to make sure the exfoliator you pick isn’t drying your skin while it’s exfoliating so watch out for chemicals and try to avoid salt-scrubs during the cold months.

Try a gentle exfoliating scrub for your face and a moisturizing sugar scrub for your body.

  1. Turn down the temperature.

We know how great a really hot shower feels in the winter, but water that is too hot can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leaving you with dry, itchy skin. Turn that temperature down just a bit and your skin will thank you!

  1. Choose products carefully. (Pick us! Pick us!)

When choosing a moisturizer, always go for something oil-based. All of our products are oil-based and are designed to nourish your skin and keep in the moisture your skin so desperately needs right now. After a shower, reach for our body serum for an all-over moisturizer. Apply our facial serum at night to keep your complexion glowing all through winter. Use our balm bar or our body butter to deliver intense moisture to your roughest spots from your hands down to your feet. And avoid those dreaded chapped lips by applying our lip balm to your pout.  All of our products are 100% natural, organic, and handmade. We will NEVER sell you a product that contains chemicals and will dry you out; only products that are consciously crafted to nourish and protect your skin.
